Aakash $45 PC Tablet Clocks 1.4 Million Sales - 2500 Rupee TabletBack in October 2011 we spruked the Indian Governments unveiling of it’s prototype touchscreen, tablet computer, the Aakash Tablet PC. The Indian Governments foresight into computing was admirable, as more data is migrated to the cloud simple web-enabled platforms such as tablet-pc’s will replace the bloated desktop and laptop hardware architectures of today, the Indian Government apparently got the premise that the future is mobile.

Since it’s release 2 weeks ago, the world’s cheapest tablet computer has clocked 1.4 million bookings since it was put up for sale online two weeks ago in India.

Kogans’s new Android-powered Agora 8-inch and Agora 10-inch tablets join Kogan’s Agora line, which also includes laptops and a 7-inch Agora tablet that launched earlier this year.

Budget tablet-pc’s seem to be the order of the week. While not as easy on the pocket as the Indian made Aakash tablet unveiled earlier this week. Our favorite consumer electronics manufacturer and online retailer, Kogan, has announced its own budget tablet offerings. Aside from the screen size and resolution – 800 x 600 for the 8-inch and 1024 x 768 for the 10-inch – the specs of the two models are identical. Both feature a 4:3 ratio capacitive touchscreen, are powered by a 1 Ghz Cortex A8 CPU and 512 MB of RAM, and come running Google Android 2.3 with access to the Android Market. The Indian Government has unveiled a prototype of a touchscreen, tablet computer, the Aakash Tablet PC will go on sale for $36. As more data is migrated to the cloud simple web-enabled platforms such as tablet-pc’s will replace the bloated desktop and laptop hardware architectures of today, the future is apparently mobile.

That other behemoth, India,  has launched what it’s dubbed as the world’s cheapest tablet computer, to be sold to students at the subsidised price of $36 and later in shops for about $61. Most of India’s 1.2 billion people are poor and products such as Apple iPad are beyond the reach even of many in the fast-growing middle class. The government is buying the first units of the lightweight touch-screen device, called Aakash, or “sky” in Hindi, for $51 each from a British company which is assembling the web-enabled devices in India.
