When it comes to technology, there are early adopters (ie those mad people who will stand in the rain outside a store for days to get their fix) and what I like to call normal people.
I am usually one of the last people in my peer group to get the latest It Phone. To illustrate, I was still using a Blackberry Bold long after the first iPhone was already growing barnacles. But a serendipitous turn of events – aka the end of my iPhone 5s contract – meant I got my hands on an iPhone 6s Plus reasonably close to the release date :: Read the full SMH article »»»»

A former chemistry professor has been arrested by Chinese police on suspicion of selling a drug recipe to a gang which cooked up synthetic narcotics, state media reports.
The 50-year-old former academic surnamed Lu had “a set of recipes for producing methcathinone”, a drug similar to methamphetamine, which he provided to dealers.
Amphetamine labs are growing at an alarming rate, a Chinese police raid on the house of two methcathinone dealers in 2011 uncovered a pile of 80 million yuan, $AU13 million, in cash.
In Australia Amphetamine arrests have nearly double in past five years, according to Crime Commission’s Illicit Drug Data Report. Trade workers and those in the hospitality industry are among the biggest users of the drug according to an analysis of national drug data.

The social networking behemoth that is Facebook, has announced it’s buying mobile messaging service WhatsApp in a deal worth $US19 billion, seriously expanding its mobile footprint.
WhatsApp, a cross-platform mobile app that allows users to exchange text messages without having to pay carrier charges, has apparently been in discussions with Facebook for more than 12 months.
The deal bolsters the Facebook’s – currently populated with more than 1.2 billion members – mobile user base with the 450-million strong WhatsApp users.
The deal will see WhatsApp operated independently.
It’s Facebook’s biggest acquisition to date, coming less than two years after Mark Zuckerberg’s firm raised $16 billion in the record breaking public stock offer.
The WhatsApp deal includes $US12 billion in Facebook shares, $4 billion in cash and $3 billion in RSUs – Restricted Stock Units – for employee retention.
Facebook said via it’s blog the deal that “the deal supports Facebook and WhatsApp’s shared mission to bring more connectivity to the world. The combination will help accelerate growth and user engagement across both companies. “
Unlike Facebook, WhatsApp is a slim operation, with less than 35 engineers – 1 engineer to 14 million users – it processes 50 billion messages a day.
The attraction runs much deeper than popularity, WhatsApp will not only boost Facebook’s international coverage, more importantly, it will add up to 350 million mobile users to Facebook’s mobile advertising offer :: Read the full article »»»»

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has defended his company’s tax avoidance tactics, Cook faced a grilling by US lawmakers accusing the tech-behemoth of sham subsidiaries and convoluted strategies to shift profits offshore, however Cook strenuously denied the company used gimmicks to avoid paying taxes. Cook told a US Senate committee Apple paid all the taxes it owed, complying with not only the law, but the spirit of the law.
Cook said last year Apple paid $US6 billion to the US coffers, a tax rate of about 30 percent.
The high level US Senate committee investigating corporate offshore tax avoidance has accused Apple of shifting billions of dollars in profits to avoid paying US taxes on a massive scale. It found Apple avoided paying $9 billion in tax in 2012. Earlier, Panel chairman Senator Carl Levin accused Apple of “exploiting an absurdity” in its tax payments.
Mr Cook told the hearing that Apple lives up to its tax obligations and more, but some lawmakers expressed outrage over findings of the panel’s probe that the tech-behemoth avoided taxes by using a web of foreign subsidiaries, some without any tax jurisdiction :: Read the full article »»»»
