Sony’s Smartwig… Seriously A Technology Filled Toupée?

Posted: December 3rd, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Sony, Standout | Tags: , , , , | Comments Off on Sony’s Smartwig… Seriously A Technology Filled Toupée?

Sony's Smart ToupéeI’ve just finished watching Michael Douglas play Liberace in Behind The Candelabra, smartest looking man in a toupée. As a rule a hairpiece doesn’t sit well, they’re always obvious, rarely believable. Michael Douglas is a a rarity – NO MAN SHOULD EVER WEAR A WIG!

All that said, someplace in the galaxy YOU KNOW someone’s been trying to fit tech-stuff inside a wig, hide technology under not-real hair, it’s such an obvious fit, right?

Apparently someone at Sony, the genius’ behind Blueray, Walkman, Playstation and Plasma, thinks this idea might fly.

According to Bloomberg, Sony has filed for a US patent on a device called “Smartwig.” Clearly Sony has disobeyed the first rule of wig-wearing, “Never admit it’s a piece.”

The new Gizmo apparently has mobile connectivity – tablet + phone – it’s also kitted with built-in navigation, a health checker, camera and slide show viewer, seriously: refer to rule 1, never admit…

Sony – holding onto  the little wisdom it has left – has admitted it’s unsure if it intends to actually commercialise the device, but we still can’t get the image of a coke-bottle goggle wearing Japanese boffin dashing about the lab wearing his supershiny black Smartwig ::::

It’s always nice to put a name to an invention, maybe not always, in this case the device was invented by Hiroaki Tobita, who works at Sony Computer Science Laboratories in Tokyo, the patent application was made on May 10 this year.

The wig would communicate wirelessly with another device and include tactile feedback, Sony said in the filing with the US Patent & Trademark Office. Depending on the model, the hairpiece may include a camera, laser pointer or global positioning system sensor.

Sony said in the patent application that the “wig would be an improved wearable computing device.” The wig could be made from “horse hair, human hair, wool, feathers, yak hair, buffalo hair or any kind of synthetic material.”

There are currently three prototypes, including the Presentation Wig, this is seriously worrying, it has a built-in laser pointer and changes PowerPoint slides with a little tug of the left or right of the device. The Navigation Wig uses a GPS and vibration to direct the user, while the Sensing Wig gathers information from inside the body such as temperature and blood pressure.

The company already does wearable devices, Sony introduced its SmartWatch 2 earlier this year. the watch has all the usual gadgetry as well as offering a second screen for users of Xperia smartphones.

Now, if that clever wig wearing boffin at Sony could just invent an actual toupée that stays on…

…ooh, if you haven’t seen Michael Douglas and Matt Damon yet, rent it, it’s soo camp! IMDB

Microsoft's Smartbra via Mashable

RELATED! …almost related, Mashable’s Chris Taylor has an equally amusing odd-wearable-gadget story. The Smartbra, by tech behemoth Microsoft mightn’t have been a surprise under Steve Ballmer – there’s a man with vision – or perhaps it’s a parting gift? Whatever, Microsoft has been on a steady climb into the realm of hardware over recent years, Surface, the Nokia handset deal and the Xbox One. Now, the tech giant is taking its first tentative steps into the world of lingerie.

The smart bra was revealed in a new paper (.PDF) from a team of five scientists at Microsoft Research, titled “Food and Mood: Just-in-Time Support for Emotional Eating.” The idea is to measure your emotional state via sensors built into the bra, cross reference that with your feelings when overeating in the past, and send a warning to your smartphone if the system thinks you’re likely to reach for the jar of cookies at any minute :: Read Chris Taylor’s full Mashable post »»»»

RELATED! Microsoft Set to Kill RT

Julie Larson-Green to Kill-off RT Tablet OSMicrosoft’s head of Devices, Julie Larson-Green has caused a stir in the tablet market, unofficially announcing that the Tech-behemoth would only be running with two – of three – operating systems for mobile devices.

Microsoft currently runs Windows Phone, RT and Windows 8 on tablets and phones. Punters are betting large on RT being the odd OS out.

RT was developed solely to take advantage of ARMs 32-bit architecture, giving devices like Surface super thinness and power efficiency. RT is a cutdown version of Windows 8, sitting smack in the middle of Phone and 8, with more functionality than Phone but less functionality of 8.

Devices currently running Windows RT have a selection of scaled back, bundled programs – MS Office 2013 – however, it’s inherently incompatible with previous versions of Windows. Punters it seems are flexing their purchasing power, choosing full-blown Windows 8 rather than the OEM only RT as their tablet OS :: Read the full article »»»»

Apple vs The Galaxy! Exploding iPhones? As if Apple’s war with Samsung, a pivotal supplier …or it’s recent brush with price-fixing, weren’t enough, the gadget giants products are now electrocuting users?

Apple says it will investigate claims that an iPhone electrocuted a Chinese woman who was making a call while charging the device. The case drew attention – both sympathetic and sceptical – after a woman in the western region of Xinjiang wrote about the death of her 23-year-old sister Ma Ailun on China’s popular microblog service Sina Weibo.

China is Apple’s second largest market, it’s products, many of them made in the country, are highly sought after. But the company came under criticism from state media in April for alleged “arrogance” and double standards, prompting an apology from chief executive Tim Cook. The People’s Daily, a mouthpiece of the ruling Communist Party, berated the US company for five days running, urging consumers to “strike away Apple’s unparalleled arrogance” :: Read the full article »»»»

Apples Latest Trick! Hydrogen Fuel Cell to Power Mobile Devices

In it’s latest patent filings, Apple is proposing a hydrogen fuel cell that can be integrated directly into mobile devices, rather than, simply a means of charging it. The device would never need recharging, rather it would need its recyclable fuel cell refilled.

The patent diagrams also show that the design for the system would employ a small rechargeable a battery that would be charged by the fuel cell, but could also send a charge back to run the fuel cell. Such a system could in theory run for days, or even weeks before having to replace the fuel cartridge.

As always with Apple Inc, this isn’t NEW technology, way back in 2008 Sharp released a prototype Direct Methanol Fuel Cell phone:  www.slashphone.com Multi purpose hydrogen chargers have been around for years: http://spectrum.ieee.org.

Motorola also has a prototype Hydrogen Fuel Cell Phone floating about someplace, doubtless they forgot to patent the gadget? Apple patent applications are always an amusement, take someone elses technology and lock it away, claim ownership :: Read the full article »»»»
